According to the City of Elgin’s history, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad created the town on August 18, 1872. Its name honors railroad land commissioner Robert Morriss Elgin. The city’s account connects the route’s development with an 1869 Colorado River flood and the nearby community known as Perryville or Hogeye.
The second major railroad came later: the Taylor, Elgin and Bastrop Railroad formed in 1886, and the Katy acquired the line that year. The two-line railroad story is therefore a later development, not the same event as the town’s founding.
The city’s history describes cotton, brick making and other businesses as important parts of Elgin’s growth. It records a prosperous cotton crop in 1900 and incorporation in 1901. Look at downtown buildings and museum exhibits with that economic history in mind rather than assuming every landmark dates from the same period.
For family histories, immigration stories and traditions, start with the Elgin Depot Museum. The city identifies its photograph and archive collections and notes that museum staff and volunteers can assist with research, including genealogy. A specific school, family or festival story deserves its own evidence rather than being repeated as an established fact without a source.

The city describes the Depot Museum’s home as the Union Depot, dating to about 1903 and restored in 2002. The Elgin Historical Association operates the museum. Check its current visitor arrangements before planning a stop; archives and exhibits give this landmark a purpose beyond a photo opportunity.
Southside Market & Barbeque’s account traces the business to William Moon in 1882 and its first physical store to 1886. Those are distinct milestones. This guide attributes the chronology to the operator rather than independently certifying a statewide oldest-business ranking.
